Main Projects
SINESH2GVALLEY
Sines Green Hydrogen Valley
Funding program – Portuguese RRP (2023-2025)
Lead Organization – HEVO PORTUGAL
The SinesH2GValley agenda brings together various partners and initiatives to establish a complete value chain for green hydrogen, creating an innovative and technologically disruptive hub in Sines. This ambitious project is fully aligned with the Portuguese National Strategy for H2, aiming to promote a unique service offering for both the region and the country, directly connecting producers with consumers.
The agenda is backed by multiple external partners in the Sines region, who see themselves as future consumers of the green hydrogen to be commercialized.
The agenda’s outcomes will include advancements in electrolysis technology, leveraging Fusion Fuel’s proprietary and patented technology. Green hydrogen, produced in dedicated plants, will be distributed to various points of use, fostering the establishment of a renewable energy community.
H2DRIVEN
Hydrogen as a Green Methanol Vector for the Chemical Industry and Heavy Mobility
Funding program – Portuguese RRP (2023-2025)
Lead Organization – CAPPWATT METANOL
The first and only Portuguese Mobilizing Alliance to incorporate green hydrogen (H2) and e-methanol for industrial decarbonization aims to eliminate Portugal’s dependence on imported gray methanol, thereby addressing a significant gap in the development of green chemistry industrial projects. This initiative also supports European sovereignty by positioning Portugal as a leader in green fuels.
The project’s primary focus is the production of e-methanol for industrial and mobility applications using domestic resources.
Portugal’s first large-scale e-methanol production unit will be established, with operations beginning in 2026 and reaching full capacity by 2028. This facility will be one of the largest e-methanol plants in Europe, with a projected production capacity of 50 kilotons per year.
H2 GREEN VALLEY
Green Agenda for the Development of a 100% Green Hydrogen Region
Funding program – Portuguese RRP (2023-2025)
Lead Organization – REN
H2 Green Valley focuses on developing H2 transmission, with storage capacity via line pack, as well as compression and distribution infrastructures, to establish the first green H2 hub in Portugal in the Sines region. This infrastructure, H2GBackbone, will connect a cluster of green H2 producers and consumers, enabling shared infrastructure costs and fostering innovative infrastructure services to maximize renewable H2 integration.
The project will also develop an injection and blending system for natural gas and H2 (H2GBlend). Additionally, it will adapt the Sines gas distribution network (H2GVillage) and implement a pilot program to convert end-users to H2, utilizing prototypes of H2-compatible home appliances developed within the project.
MOVING2NEUTRALITY
Sustainable Fuels for Mobility
Funding program – Portuguese RRP (2023-2025)
Lead Organization – PETROGAL
The Moving2Neutrality agenda focuses on developing sustainable fuels and technologies for a carbon-neutral transportation sector. It aims to establish industrial infrastructure in Sines for producing green hydrogen, synthetic renewable fuels, and biofuels. This initiative seeks to enhance the distribution and adoption of green fuels, promote emissions reduction in the transport and industrial sectors, and play a crucial role in replacing fossil fuel alternatives currently available on the market.
Additionally, the project supports the development of technologies such as electrolysis, ammonia synthesis, biomass and waste gasification, and syngas purification, all of which are essential for powering sustainable road transportation and decarbonizing aviation. The initiative also explores the end-use of green ammonia and hydrogen in decentralized power systems, fostering a deeper understanding of fuel combustion characteristics redesign of current systems.
H2tALENT
Alentejo Green Hydrogen Valley delivering integrated full-chain sustainable hydrogen ecosystem with technical, economic, social, and environmental benefits and superior upscaling/replicability
Funding program – HorizonEurope (2024-2029)
Lead Organization- CAMPUS SUL
The H2tALENT project aims to establish an integrated, full-chain sustainable hydrogen ecosystem in the Alentejo region, creating Portugal’s first Green Hydrogen Valley. This initiative brings together a consortium of 29 partners from 6 countries, including universities, SMEs, government institutions, large corporations, and leading research and technology organizations. The project focuses on developing, implementing, and testing sustainable and innovative solutions for hydrogen production and applications in the Alentejo region.
It encompasses a wide range of hydrogen applications across industries, transportation, and buildings, while promoting integration with existing and planned infrastructure in the area. By optimizing energy system integration and developing tools for efficient planning and operation, this infrastructure serves as a model for replicating and scaling hydrogen valleys in other parts of the world, thus advancing the widespread use and accessibility of green hydrogen.
